What a Week It's Bean (Jul 4-10)

It's Friday at spunkybean headquarters and it's that time of the week when we take down all the random yellow Post-it notes from our office cubes, and we take the leftover pink and blue index cards down from the "joke board" and we assemble them all into a weekly feature we like to call "What a Week It's Bean."  We also leave just about a half-hour early to get a jump on the traffic.

From a pop-culture standpoint, this week was pretty Michael Jackson heavy.  We've appropriately (barely) made a few observations on that.  We also kicked off "Harry Potter Week" on spunkybean with our own Potterologist, Casey Pilkenton, leading the effort.  Make sure to check out her "Top 10 Reasons Harry Potter is better than Twilight" article, and her ode to Neville Longbottom - a character you might not know if you are only watching the movies (for shame!).

And so ...much ...more.  A recap, or "re-Tweet" if you will, of social media's ability to cover an event, a few EJ opinions on stuff, and a new All-Pilot project - because if there's anything we do here, is we waste our time watching shows that you might not like so you don't have to figure it our for yourself.

Have a great weekend.  "Harry Potter Week" continues next week and much, much more.

Sales of Michael Jackson albums soared last week, landing Michael Jackson and Jackson 5 albums in the top 10 positions on the Billboard charts, in Nielson Soundscan research, and even the top 5 spots on iTunes.  Holding strong at the 11th spot?  Right Said Fred's 1992 Up CD featuring the runaway hit, "I'm Too Sexy."  (dk)

The sci-fi blockbuster "Transformers" shot past the $300 million mark domestically on Tuesday—after just 14 days in release. That makes it the second-fastest movie to top $300 million, behind last summer's "The Dark Knight," which made it in 10 days.  It was aided in this landmark accomplishment in large part because 70% of those who purchased tickets thought it was a documentary on Michael Jackson and his plastic surgeries. Pick up dry cleaning, remind them light starch next time (dk)

(I told you ...we included all the Post-It notes)

Michael Bay has, no kidding, lashed out at Paramount for not promoting Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen enough.  In a leaked, and poorly-written, memo, he complained to the studio that their marketing budget was inadequate.  Wait, there's a second Transformers movie?  You'd think we would have heard something about that by now, perhaps on the covers of all the major entertainment magazines or near-constant television commercials, or maybe promos for the movie within, say, commercials for GM automobiles.  In an unrelated story, Michael Bay can suck it. MySpace will lay off 700 employees, including demoting co-founder Tom Anderson.  Anderson, best known for being the default "friend" on the social networking site will take a drastic pay cut and will no longer have any involvement with the running of the site.  And this, right here, is the first time you've been reminded that MySpace exists in two years. Ryan Seacreast and Lindsay Lohan are developing a reality show together.  The show will find "people who are on the wrong track" and give them $1 million to start over.  Rumor has it, the first wayward recipient of one million dollars will be Lindsay Lohan. (ej)

Speaking of Lindsay Lohan, it was revealed that she turned down the role in The Hangover that ended up going to Heather Graham.  Wow, I'm starting to think this girl might make some bad decisions... (ej)

Organizers of the Academy Awards announced that this year there will be 10 nominees for Best Picture.  Oscar voters are said to be worried that now it's going to be twice as hard to snub Pixar. (ej)

This next bit contains two separate pieces of information that will blow your mind:  Val Kilmer is considering running for Governor of New Mexico, after he finishes his role on the in-production MacGruber movie.  I did not make up one single word of that last sentence. (ej)
